This song continues an arc El-P began 15 years ago on the Company Flow track “Last Good Sleep” and continued on “Stepfather Factory” off of Fantastic Damage. For those of you who don’t know, El-P has a personal history with domestic abuse. His alcoholic stepfather nearly beat his mother to death, and the previous two songs were his way of dealing with the psychological baggage from that experience (you can read his essay on it here). This time, though, he’s not personally involved. Instead, he’s overhearing a fight from upstairs, and while he doesn’t tell the police who’ve been called about the domestic dispute anything, when he runs into the victim in the stairwell, he tells her he won’t tell the police anything if she kills her husband. It’s dark, harrowing stuff, and a good example of what sets El-P apart.
